Your Hanukah celebration will be forever changed if you make a latke board. Okay, I know what you are thinking. I didn’t actually use a board. Fair assessment. I used the charcuterie board concept by filling up a pretty and festive serving dish with latkes and surrounding it with all different types of fun toppings. The result: absolute perfection! You need this in your life, I promise, whether you celebrate Hanukah or not.
So where to start? With latkes, of course! I usually make my latkes pretty big but for the board I wanted them to be 1 to 2 bites. I used a 5-pound bag of russet potatoes and got 48 latkes out of the batch. If you are entertaining and want to do as much prep work beforehand, make your latkes earlier and then reheat them in a 300 degree oven for 15 minutes.
Now, let’s move on to the toppings. These are just suggestions based on what I knew my family and friends would like. You know your audience best so go with what you think will be crowd pleasers.
- Applesauce: This is probably the most traditional topping that everyone associates with latkes. At my table, everyone reaches for the applesauce first. While homemade is great, there are so many good jarred applesauces out there if you want to skip making your own. I highly recommend Vermont Village!
- Sour cream: While I am not a sour cream fan, I recognize that a lot of people are. The nice thing about sour cream is that it goes well with a lot of the toppings below.
- Smoked salmon: This is my second favorite topping behind applesauce. However much you buy, buy more. People love smoked salmon more than you would believe.
- Capers: Salty heaven, yes please.
- Chopped fresh dill: This goes so nicely with the smoked salmon and capers.
- Garlic herb cream cheese: This was a surprise hit on my board. It’s soft, spreadable and oh so tasty.
- Caramelized onions: Besides the latkes, this would be the only topping requiring some cooking. Slice a few onions thinly, cook them in butter or oil for about 30 minutes, adding a touch of brown sugar, balsamic vinegar and salt at the end. Easy peasy and so good. Add the onions on top of the garlic herb cream cheese. You’re welcome. If you don’t feel like caramelizing the onions, some chopped red onions will be great and give a nice pop of color.
- Chopped chives: Sour cream and chives just go together even on latkes!
- Sliced radishes: You may not know it but radish lovers lurk everywhere. I put these on my board and my daughter loved them. You could also add sliced cucumbers or apples.
